Spring Has Sprung – Pack Winter Away with Self Storage

St Patrick’s Day has passed, Mother’s Day is done and dusted, trees and bushes are bursting into bloom and the birds are singing a little louder. We’ve even gladly swapped an hour in bed for that extra hour of daylight in the evenings to do with as we please. It can all mean only one thing – we can finally wave bye-bye to winter!

With the arrival of spring, many of us feel the need for what’s officially known in Ireland as ‘a good clear out’. It feels great to make the house light and airy for the coming season and mentally prepare for what can feel like freer days ahead – particularly for parents who are heading into long school holidays with the kids – and their clutter – home all day!

The ‘good clear out’ can traditionally be used to get rid of stuff we’re not using anymore but what about the stuff we don’t want to get rid of, but we won’t need for the next six months or so that’s taking up space? Self Storage, of course. Setting aside the time to sort out all of those winter things and safely put them into storage can clear the decks wonderfully for the warmer months!

Winter gear can take up a lot of space – a lot more than you’d think! Have a good think about what exactly you can clear out of the house and into a self storage and you’ll be amazed at the amount of space you can free up.

Clothing

Take a little trip around your home – see what’s stashed under the stairs, hanging on the hallstand, waiting in the wardrobe and disarrayed in your drawers? Tons of stuff – puffy and heavy jackets, a selection of woolly scarves, hats and gloves. You’ll have big, chunky sweaters galore – what about all those those pairs of fluffy pj’s that you’ve had in rotation since last October? The ‘big’ dressing gown, the ‘good’ coats – even your thermals. You’ll soon find that these items really pile up – and take up a lot of space. Kept in a storage unit, however (keep reading for helpful tips on how best to store them), they’re out of sight and out of mind while you turn your thoughts to shorts and t-shirts. Don’t store the raingear, though – it is Ireland we’re talking about here.

Bedding and Blankets

The night will soon come when the 13.5 tog duck feather and down duvet will make you feel like you’re sleeping in a pizza oven  (but you still won’t want to stick your feet out of the end of the bed incase of monsters!). And those throws and blankets might have been your best friends on those chilly nights but even they deserve a little break from use. Instead of cramming them into the hotpress, or squeezing them into the bottom of the wardrobe, free all the space they take up by popping them safely into a storage unit where you can easily access them again the minute you feel a bit of a chill.

Boots and Shoes

You’re heading into sandal season when footwear becomes considerably lighter and smaller – flip flops ahoy, folks! Gather up all of those heavy boots, wellies and everything fur and fleece-lined and get them securely out of the way and ready to wear next year.

Winter Equipment

Swop your skis for waterskis, your snowboards for surfboards, your thermal camping gear for something more seasonal. Been keeping up your cardio on an indoor exercise bike or rowing machine while the weather’s been cold and wet? Swop for the real thing and get out on the road into the water now it’s fine – you’ll appreciate the extra space all summer long.  It’s good to connect with the great outdoors, whatever the season, and even better to keep the great indoors clutter-free when your gear isn’t in use.

STORING TIPS

Clean Everything

Wash, polish, de-mud – get rid of all the stains and dirt before you store to prevent damage and also to have nice, fresh, clean items to unpack next winter. Most importantly – dry and air everything out thoroughly to prevent mould and mildew while it’s all stored away.

Contain Yourself

Protect everything by using appropriate storage – airtight plastic tubs work well for most clothing, shoes, blankets, throws and duvets. For coats, think about garment bags to keep them dry and crinkle-free. When it comes to equipment – padded bags or covers will prevent them getting damaged. Make sure to label everything clearly so that you have a wonderfully easy time picking it all up next winter.

Perfect Climate

Think about taking advantage of a climate-controlled unit for items like woollen clothing, leather boots or equipment, or delicate sports gear. These units maintain the perfect temperature consistently and help to prevent damage to your belongings.

So there you have it – pop the winter stuff into your storage unit and enjoy the space – physical and mental – that it all brings. You won’t have to get rid of anything you don’t want to, and all your stuff is easily accessible whenever you need it. And if it works well for your winter gear, then it will work just as well for your summer gear too so all you have to do is swop it all around when the leaves start looking a bit yellow.

In the meantime, spring has sprung and summer’s a coming so enjoy it, clutter free, all with thanks to Self Storage!
